Kristianstad is located in southern Sweden, in the region of Skåne. If you have ever been here before you know why we are so proud of our municipality. If not, please come and discover why. Kristianstad is all about variety. The city and its surroundings offer something for everyone: art, museums, events, beaches, concerts, recreation, nature – and more.
Kristianstad has a unique history. The city was founded more than 400 years ago when King Christian IV of Denmark decided he wanted to raise a fort impossible for intruders to invade as Skåne was Danish at that time. Over the ages Swedish and Danish troops have fought over Skåne, but since 1658 it has been a part of Sweden. In today’s Kristianstad you can see signs of its history by walking the cobbled streets of the city centre, relaxing in one of the parks or visiting the theatre which is one of the oldest of its kind in Sweden.
Even though the people of Kristianstad are proud of the history, they tend to put the main focus on what is yet to come. The city is filled with new thinking: modern shopping malls, nature preservation and an large multifunctional arena for sports and other major events – Kristianstad Arena.
